Dave Cook of the New York Times included three South American Restaurants in his recent $25 and Under Restaurant write up. Their first mention is of the excellent Cafecito Bogota, just right down the street from my apartment in Greenpoint. I have been here before, though not since they remodeled, and, from what I can tell, lowered their prices (new $7.95 Arepa dinner menu). They specialize in Arepas and have more than a dozen preparations, which mostly differ in toppings such as shrimp and plantain. Colombian coffees, soups, and South American wines make the menu as well.
The other two restaurants Cook mentions, both in Queens, are Urubamba, a Peruvian restaurant in Jackson Heights and Warung Kario, a Surinamese (?!) place in Richmond Hill.
